About Nagina City, Uttar Pradesh India
Nagina, literally meaning "Jewel," is a culturally rich and historically significant town in the Bijnor district of Uttar Pradesh, India. Its name symbolizes its beauty and historical value. The city was founded during the Mughal period when Syed Ghalib Ali, a prominent noble, received the region as a jagir (land grant) from the Mughal Empire. He established the town by constructing the Nagina Mahal or Bara Mahal, which is still located in Mohalla Syedwara, a historic locality in Nagina.
Historical Significance
Nagina is mentioned in Ain-i-Akbari, the 16th-century Mughal record authored by Abul Fazl, as the headquarters of Nagina Mahal (Bara Mahal) or Pargana. During the British colonial period, Nagina continued to hold administrative importance. It served as the headquarters of Nagina Tehsil in Bijnor district, part of the then United Provinces (now Uttar Pradesh).
Between 1817 and 1824, Nagina was even designated as the headquarter of the newly formed Northern Moradabad district. By the year 1901, Nagina Tehsil included 464 villages and two towns.
A symbol of the region's defense and political history, a fort was built during the Rohilla period in the 18th century, which was later repurposed by the British for Tehsil administrative functions. In 1805, the city was attacked and sacked by Pashtun forces led by Muhammad Amir Khan.
During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, Nagina witnessed a fierce battle between the British army and the Nawab of Najibabad. The Nawab was defeated on April 21, 1858, leading to stronger British control over the Bijnor region. Later, in 1886, Nagina was declared a municipality.
